Burton Leonard 2nd XI v Pateley Bridge

Burton Leonard 2nd XI recorded their first win of the season yesterday with a comfortable six wicket win over Pateley Bridge. The match was played in glorious sunshine, and the result was very much needed after a disappointing start to the season.

Pateley Bridge won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat first on a surface which was only going to get better the more sun it had. Almost immediately the visitors were in trouble as Johnny Duffy clean bowled two of the top order with only three runs on the board.

Gareth Foxton steadied the ship with a useful 40, launching into anything wide of off stump before being cleaned up by Iain Barker. After that it was left to "Chuck" Hardcastle to drop anchor whilst Miles Sutton at the other end quickly raced to fifty helped by some big sixes and Pateley Bridge were beginning to build a useful score. However the introduction of Iain's father, Stuart slowed the run rate down and the Pateley Bridge innings closed on 195-6, with Barker Snr finishing with 10-1-35-3 and Sutton making a useful 85.

After a delightful tea courtesy of the Burton skipper, Trevor Kettlewell, the Burton reply began and a good one it was too with 47 being added for the first wicket before Ollie Moffat misjudged a short one, and then number three Chris Sladen followed quickly afterwards, driving uppishly to mid off and getting caught.

Mark Fox was third out when the score was 76, caught chasing a wide one off veteran bowler, Chris Mawer and when Bryan Slack was caught, the innings was precariously balanced at 86-4 in the 26th over with a further 110 runs required for victory.

However a partnership between Joe Wilson and Ben Drummond flourished thanks to some good batting and very poor fielding. Runs began to flow very quickly and both batsmen began finding the boundary and soon the required rate was down to under five an over and the game looked to be going only one way. Joe Wilson passed 50 for the first time this season with a crashing blow through the covers, and with two and bit overs left, the Pateley Bridge total had been passed with Joe Wilson finishing 66* and Ben Drummond 38*.

Next week, Burton Leonard face a tough trip to top of the table Harrogate Strays.
