Burton Leonard Seconds go down at Alne

Having lost their last two saturday games, Burton Leonard 2nd XI suffered another defeat at the hands of Alne 2nd XI. On a very warm day, the Burton skipper, Trevor Kettlewell won the toss and chose to bat first on a good dry pitch.

However it wasn't long before wickets began to fall and Ben Drummond, Chris Sladen, Matthew Rangeley and Stuart Barker were "back in the hut" without troubling the scorers too much and the Burton innings was in a bit of a sorry state at 27-4 within the first 12 overs. Wickets continued to tumble, and at one stage a score of less than 100 was on the cards. Fortunately a partnership between Mark Fox and the opening batsmen Simon Parkinson who had watched wickets fall at the other end, and then a very useful late order contribution of 44* from the club chairman, Andrew Dallas ensured that not only did Burton achieve some sort of respectability finishing the innings on 160-9 , but also a prize batting point was gained.

The Alne reply started well as Burton Leonard's opening bowler, Rangeley struggled with his radar, which was a shame because when he got it right, he caused plenty of problems for the batsmen. Johnny Duffy bowled well from the other end without any luck and Alne managed to add 126 for the first wicket in 25 overs and the propect of defeat was looming large. Iain Barker managed to pick up three late wickets but the game was over after 32 overs and Alne had won by 7 wickets.

Burton will be hoping for better things next week in their local derby match against Staveley at home next week.
