Burton Leonard 2nd XI v Staveley

Burton Leonard CC

Burton Leonard 2nds XI put in a much improved performance yesterday at home against a strong Staveley side and even though they lost the game comprehensively a crucial batting point was secured thanks to sensible batting from Stuart Barker and Joe Wilson and some entertaining stroke play from Iain Barker.

Having won the toss, Burton elected to bat first on a dryish suface which had been covered all week but soon found themselves in trouble at 16-3 with Tom Rowlay ("Judas") doing most of the damage with some very useful away swing. However Stu Barker and skipper Joe Wilson steadied the ship taking the score passed 100 before Wilson was clean bowled by Sim Baines for a hard earned 25. Stu Barker went on to his first half century of season whilst batting with his son, Iain who made a quick fire 33 which included two sixes and two fours.

The Burton innings closed on a respectable 174-8 with Stu Barker unbeaten on 59, although bowling would be difficult in the second half of the match on a drying flat surface. This unfortunately proved to be the case with only one Staveley wicket falling as former Burton player Simon Parkinson (79*) and Will McDowall (72*) knocked off the runs with ten overs to spare. Although Burton bowled and fielded reasonably well, they will rue the life they gave Simon Parkinson in the deep early on in his innings.

So, A good win for Staveley and a good point for Burton; next week's trip to relegated Dishforth will be tough, but there is no reason after yesterday's performance that a positive result cannot be achieved.
