Dishforth v Burton Leonard 2nd XI
Burton Leonard 2nd XI made it two wins out of four with an excellent seven wicket win at Dishforth. Fielding the most youthful Burton second team since records began, a superb team effort with bat and ball ensured a memorable victory.
Chris Sladen, the acting Burton skipper won the toss and inserted Dishforth on a "green top". Weather conditions were very cold and windy and Dishforth got off to a steady start as Iain Barker and Sam Crompton made first use of a seaming pitch with the new cherry. Barker struck first when opener Stansfield was adjudicated leg before. The introduction of Stu Barker at the football pitch end once Sam Crompton had completed his initial five overs steadied the score even further and the veteran seamer rolled off twelve consecutive overs, finishing with miserly figures of 12-7-11-2. All the bowlers bowled well and the under fifteen pair of Alex Ellerby and David Burrows chipped with good figures as Burton got into Dishforth's tail.
It was at this point that the rain and wind became too heavy and a half hour break was taken reducing the game to 40 per side. The last seven overs saw Dishforth's Dan and Dave Bettes-Hall rally a bit and their innings closed on 144-6, a total Burton knew they could chase down if the senior members of the side performed with the willow.
After a much needed tea, the Burton innings set off well as Leigh Parsons and Phil Chatterton put on 39 for the first wicket. The innings then had a bit of a wobble as three wickets fell in a short space of time as first Phil Chatterton nicked one to the keeper, Chris Sladen was adjudged to have been caught behind and Ben Drummond was caught one handed somehow at deepish extra cover. It was left to Stuart Barker to try and stay at the crease with Leigh Parsons which was exactly what happened as Burton took advantage of Dishforth's second string bowlers and the runs began to flow as Parsons and Barker began hitting over the infield and the boundaries began to flow. By the second ball of the 34th over, the game was won and Burton had secured a comfortable seven wicket win. Next week's home game against Markington will not be an easy encounter.
