Evening Cricket got underway last night at Burton Leonard when the B Team took on Pannal Ash in Division 6 of the Harrogate and District Evening Cricket League. However Burton will be kicking themselves as they somehow managed to succumb to an eight run defeat even though they were fielding an above strength side due to the fact the A team had no game.

On a beautiful sunny evening on a dryish surface, Pannal Ash won the toss and predictably decided to bat first and got off to the worst possible start when Clarke was cleaned bowled by A team bowler and 1st XI skipper, Neil Blaken. However Ash steadied the ship and a 132 run partnership was built by J Thompson and J Leedham before veteran slow bowler Trevor Kettlewell picked up two wickets towards the end of the Pannal Ash innings to finish with figures if 2-19 from his four overs. J Thompson finished with 56* and J Leedham 64 and the Pannal Ash innings closed on 137-3 from their sixteen overs.

Burton Leonard’s reply began in a similar fashion to Pannal Ash’s when Dan Thirkell played all round from Taylor that apparently “swung”. After this a run a ball 73 run partnership was made between 18 year old Chris Parker and Neil Blaken who took the score to 85, before both were dismissed by Buckley in quick succession. Sadly after this there were very few major contributions as the score limped over 100, but with wickets falling the task of knocking off the remaining runs got harder and harder and 17 runs were needed off the last over with the youngest player of the evening, David Slack (14) and the eldest Wilf Wigglesworth (69) at the crease. Sadly only 9 runs could be mustered off the final over and Burton ended eight runs short in a game they should have won.

Below are some pictures of the Burton Leonard innings and the final one most definitely proves the saying that “rabbits only come out in the dark”.
